Best VPN in Australia: 8 Things to Check Before You Pay

Quick answer
- We don't rank VPNs. This checklist works on any provider, with NordVPN and Proton VPN as dated examples from their own sites.
- The checks that matter most are Australian server locations, an outside check of no-logs claims, and refund rules you can actually use.
- The Australian Cyber Security Centre's advice is to use a reputable provider, and to remember a VPN won't stop malware or phishing.
Search "best VPN Australia" and you'll find dozens of top-ten lists, most of them paid for by the companies at the top. We don't publish a ranking. The best VPN for you is the one that passes the checks that matter for how you'll use it. VPN plans, server networks and prices change often, and the right choice depends on what you need it for. Instead, here are eight things to check with any provider, using two well-known companies as dated examples. The facts were checked on official Australian government pages and the companies' own websites on 30 October 2026.

No link on this site is an affiliate link right now. We may earn a commission from VPN or security companies in future when a reader buys through a link on this site. If that happens we'll label those links and explain it in our affiliate disclosure, and it won't change the facts we publish. Facts were checked on official and company websites on 30 October 2026. Why we don't publish a ranking
A ranking implies one VPN is right for everyone. It isn't. Someone who wants a VPN for hotel Wi-Fi twice a year has different needs from a household covering six devices. Rankings also go out of date quickly, and they're often shaped by who pays the publisher.
What doesn't change is the set of questions. The Australian Cyber Security Centre's remote working tips boil it down to one: use a reputable VPN provider. The checks below are how you find out whether a provider is one.
1. Australian server locations
If you're in Australia and want a fast connection for everyday use, a server close to you helps. The further your traffic travels to reach the VPN server, the more delay you'll notice.
Both example companies publish their Australian locations:
- NordVPN lists 237 servers in Australia across 5 locations, and 7,200+ servers worldwide (NordVPN).
- Proton VPN lists servers in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, and 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries (Proton VPN).
Server counts are the company's own figures. More servers isn't automatically better. What matters is whether there's one near you and whether it performs well when you test it.
2. Independent no-logs checks
Every VPN company says it doesn't keep logs of what you do. The useful question is whether anyone outside the company has checked.
- NordVPN says Deloitte Lithuania carried out its sixth no-logs assurance engagement under the ISAE 3000 (Revised) standard, between 10 November and 12 December 2025. The report was issued on 12 December 2025 and is available to subscribers in their account rather than published openly (NordVPN).
- Proton VPN says the auditing firm Securitum completed its fifth consecutive annual no-logs audit, with a 2026 report it links from its blog (Proton).
An audit or assurance report checks a company's systems at a point in time. It doesn't guarantee the future. Still, a company that pays an outside firm to look, year after year, has given you more than one that only makes the claim.
3. Refund rules before you commit
A money-back guarantee lets you test the service on your own connection. Read the conditions before you pay, not after.
- NordVPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers, separate from its free trial. If you bought through Apple's App Store, the refund goes through Apple (NordVPN).
- Proton VPN offers a 30-day money-back guarantee if you subscribed in the last 30 days, and says it can't refund bank transfer or cash payments (Proton VPN).
Diarise the 30th day. A guarantee is only useful if you use it in time.
4. A free plan, if there is one
A free plan can be enough for light use. It always comes with limits. Proton VPN's free plan, for example, covers 1 device, has no ads and no data cap, and connects to servers in 10 countries that are randomly selected (Proton VPN pricing). We didn't find a free plan on NordVPN's pages. It offers a 7-day free trial on its 1-year and 2-year Prime plans for new customers, which charges you unless you cancel (NordVPN).
Our free VPN guide covers the trade-offs and the red flags in free apps.
5. Devices covered
Count your devices before you compare. A phone, a laptop and a tablet is already three. Proton VPN says its Plus plan covers up to 10 devices (Proton VPN). NordVPN's Australian server page lists 10 simultaneous connections (NordVPN). Check the plan page before you buy, because limits can change.
Also check whether the company has apps for every device you use. A plan that covers ten devices is no use if one of them isn't supported.
6. Streaming expectations
Be realistic. Australian streaming services are licensed for Australia, and several block VPN connections. Stan shows error A26 when it detects a VPN, proxy or custom DNS (Stan Help). Netflix says VPNs can cause an error and aren't supported for live events or ad-supported plans.
If streaming is a big part of why you want a VPN, read our streaming guide first. You may find the best setting at home is VPN off for the TV.
7. Where the company is based, and which privacy rules apply
The VPN company sees your traffic, so the rules it operates under matter. In Australia, the Privacy Act 1988 covers Australian Government agencies and organisations with annual turnover above $3 million, plus some others, according to the OAIC.
Many VPN companies are based overseas. Their privacy policy should say where they're based, which law they say applies, and what they collect when you sign up and pay. If it's vague on those points, that's a reason to keep looking.
8. Reputation and honesty
A reputable provider, in the ACSC's words, is one you can find out about. Look for:
- A named company with a real website and published terms.
- Plain claims. Be wary of any VPN that says it makes you anonymous or stops hackers outright. The ACSC says a VPN won't protect you from malware, phishing or software flaws.
- Official apps only. Download from the company's own site or your device's official app store. Avoid modified or "cracked" versions of paid VPN apps, which can come with malware built in.
Testing a VPN in your first week
Once you've picked one, use the refund window to test it properly:
- Speed at home and away. Try an Australian server at home, then on your phone's mobile data and on a public network.
- The apps you rely on. Open your banking app, work tools and streaming services with the VPN on. Note anything that breaks.
- Every device. Install it on each device you counted in step 5.
- Switching off. Check how easy it is to turn the VPN off for a moment, and that you notice when it's off.
If something important doesn't work, ask for the refund before the deadline rather than hoping it improves.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best VPN in Australia?
There isn't one answer. Check Australian server locations, an outside no-logs check, the refund rules, device limits and the company's privacy policy, then test it during the refund window on your own connection.
Do I need an Australian server?
For everyday use in Australia, a nearby server usually gives a faster connection. Both example companies list several Australian locations.
Is a no-logs audit a guarantee?
No. It checks a company's systems at a point in time. Repeated outside checks over several years tell you more than a one-off claim.
Can I try a VPN before paying?
Some providers have free plans, and many offer a money-back period. NordVPN and Proton VPN both list 30 days, with conditions.
Should I avoid VPNs based overseas?
Not necessarily, but check where the company is based and which privacy law it says applies. The Privacy Act covers Australian organisations above a $3 million turnover, plus some others.
Will a good VPN stop scams?
No. The ACSC says a VPN won't protect you from phishing or malware. Our online scams guide covers what does help.
